Masks used for centuries After the 1100s, the masquerade ball was outlawed by the Catholic Church, especially on holy days. Although the Venice Carnival lost popularity as its cultural production plummeted during the Venetian enlightenment, it was reintroduced in 1979. Today's modern celebrations of the Venice Carnival have reinvigorated Venetian mask art.
